Message from our Pastor
Dear Family of Bethlehem
It was two years this August that I discovered there was a Lutheran Church located in Traverse City, Michigan. Soon after our first conversation with Dennis Conant, Jean and I met with Bishop Gary Hansen and Bishop- elected Schleicher at the national assembly in Orland, Florida. A few days later we flew back to Norwich, N. Y. The following morning we started our drive to Traverse City. You know the rest of the story!
As I reflect on our second anniversary of introduction to the family of Bethlehem, Heraclitus the ancient philosopher’s enigma comes to mind: “Expect the unexpected or you won’t find it”. In other words the creator of our cosmos is continually surprising us! Isn’t it the unexpected that makes life possible? Martin Luther would call that GRACE.
I have heard many people when they talk about their spiritual path often refer to experiences as being a part of a grand journey. I feel that coming to Traverse City was not just a trip. Our coming together is part of a journey that is so much bigger than you and I. We are on a journey. We are companions. With that said I want to share a reflection on the word journey with you.
The Latin root of the word journey means daily. You can even see the French word for day as jour. Somehow journey conjures up all sorts of images: planning the trip, packing, stress, uncertainty, price of fuel, mountains and valleys and even heroic challenges. All of these experiences are part of a journey but the real challenge is to live the spiritual life day by day. All of us at some time or other fall off the spiritual wagon. The last two years of our journey together have been filled with unexpected surprises and unexpected disappointments, pain and sorrow, laugher and tears. It has been our privilege to pray with you and for you, to break bread with you, to witness wedding vows, to bury your loved ones, to morn with you and to celebrate unexpected moments of joy and sorrow. You have supported us with your love and treasure. Jean and I thank you and renew our pledge to you.
Our Journey together is a gift from God. From this moment on we look forward, listening to God, and walking with God into a new era of Bethlehem’s ministry and mission. The council is focused, the leaders and volunteers are dedicated to the mission of Jesus Christ. Jean and I invite you to continue your journey with The Bethlehem family as we look forward to deepening our spiritual roots, growing in our faith, sharing and being together. Our committees together with Team Plan All Committee Night have a vision for Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a vision that will strengthen us in faith, love and fellowship as we serve our Lord. Come with us, join with us , and be empowered by the GRACE of God in the unexpected .
With Joy in Being Your Pastor,
James
